How can LED biosensors measure biometric values on wearable devices?
The skin is illuminated using red LED and IRLED light sources, and then detected how much light reaches the other side. More oxygenated blood absorbs more infrared light, while oxygen-deficient blood absorbs more red light. Green light enters the skin by conduction, where it is scattered and partially absorbed by the blood. A small portion of the emitted light is scattered back to the photodiode and is detected by a complex integrated circuit. The blood volume varies with the heart rate and thus the absorption of light and photodiode signals follows the heart rate accordingly. The sensor determines blood oxygen levels by looking at the ratio of transmitted light.
In addition, the absorption of hemoglobin molecules depends on their access to oxygen. By measuring the PPG signal of red and infrared light a value of blood oxygen can be obtained.
