Is laser TV the only option for large-screen TVs?

In this era of information explosion, large screens have become a major trend in display electronics, and a larger screen means more information can be accommodated. As a result, cell phones and notebooks have adopted full-screen bezel-less designs for larger screens, just to cram a larger screen under a limited body.

And TV as a greater entertainment properties of the product, a larger screen brings a more immersive experience, and thus the size of the TV also broke 100 inches. Of course, the larger screen brings a higher price, 100-inch TV easily hundreds of thousands of dollars in price is obviously not the general public can afford to spend.

So, the size can easily break 100 inches, and the price is relatively more reasonable laser TV, began to be known to the public. So, in addition to larger, laser TV and ordinary LCD TV compared to what advantages and disadvantages?

Laser TV versus regular TV

The most important parameters of a screen are color, brightness and life. In these parameters, laser TV compared to ordinary TV on what advantages and disadvantages?

Color Performance

Most of the laser TVs on the market are monochrome laser (blue laser) or two-color laser (blue, red laser), through the excitation of phosphor to achieve red, green, blue three colors. This way the cost is lower, but the color performance of the picture is also relatively general, with ordinary LCD TV gap is not large.

However, as the technology matures, laser TVs with RBG tricolor laser have also started to appear, and at the recent CES, the tricolor laser brought a purer light source and a much improved color performance of the picture.Take the Nut U2pro tricolor laser TV for example, this laser TV can achieve a super high color gamut of 114% BT.2020, BT.2020 is a standard specified by the International Telecommunication Union for Ultra HD UHD (4K and 8K) video production and color rendering system, it is wider than the familiar DCI-P3 color gamut, 114% BT.2020 color gamut is equivalent to 159% of DCI-P3 color gamut. Such a color gamut performance can be said to be more than most LCD TVs on the market today, and even OLED TVs.

Screen brightness

Laser TV is the same as the projector principle, are using the light source to project the picture, and then through diffuse reflection into the human eye, and therefore, the final presentation of the picture brightness, will be affected by the brightness of the light source and ambient light.

Laser TV brightness is usually measured in lumens, lumens are also divided into light source lumens and screen lumens (ANSI lumens), and screen lumens is usually the brightness of the cell phone screen of laser TV. Now some high-end laser TV such as just released the nut U2pro can do 3500ANSI screen lumens, with Fester Fresnel screen, this brightness is already quite bright, even at night with the lights off will feel blinding. Therefore, regardless of the lights on and off, day and night will not have much impact on the picture.

But the laser TV is, after all, diffuse reflection, compared to self-luminous, light directly into the human eye, the peak brightness can casually exceed 1000nit LCD TV, this brightness is obviously still not enough to see, in the environment of the comparison, the picture will still have a certain degree of loss.

Of course, although the LCD TV is brighter, but the light is directly into the human eye, more harmful to the human eye, so the LCD TV usually has a suitable viewing distance. In contrast, the laser TV will be more eye protection, close to not too harsh, but more theater-like immersion.

Service life

Laser TVs use a laser light source that can generally reach a life of 20,000 hours, which is quite a long life compared to projectors that use a light bulb light source. However, the backlight of LCD TVs can usually reach a life of 50,000 hours.

The reason for this is that the laser light source is small, high temperature, easy to age. LCD TV light source is more dispersed, orderly arrangement, uniform brightness, good heat dissipation, and therefore compared to the laser TV life is much higher. Of course, with the progress of technology, the life of the laser TV is gradually improving.

Write at the end

Perhaps many people think that laser TV is a super short focal length projector, called laser TV is just a marketing gimmick. So what should be called laser TV or ultra-short focal length projector, in fact, depends on your definition of television, but it is undeniable that today’s laser TV has become a new category different from the projector.

With the maturity of the three-color laser TV technology, today’s laser TV is not only bigger size this advantage, although in the brightness and life is still not as good as LCD TV, but the color performance has begun to gradually surpass the LCD TV. It is believed that with the increase in public awareness and acceptance, as well as laser TV technology is more mature, the future price of laser TV will be further down. Laser TV or will be a new direction of the future large-screen TV.
