Wiring harness waterproofing is a necessary element of the wiring harness work. Once the waterproofing of the wiring harness fails, it is easy to cause each electrical system to work abnormally, which affects the comfort of the whole car and even causes great safety risks as well. After the design is completed, a waterproofing test should be conducted in order to check the reliability of the waterproofing design. Here I will briefly introduce the definition and test method of automotive wiring harness waterproof level.

IP (INGRESS PROTECTION) protection level system is drafted by IEC (INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION), which classifies electrical appliances according to their dust and moisture-proof characteristics. IP protection level is composed of two numbers, the first number indicates the level of dust-proof and protection from foreign objects (the foreign objects referred to here include tools, human fingers, etc. cannot touch the electrically charged part of the appliance to avoid electric shock), and the second number indicates the degree of moisture-proof and watertightness of the appliance, the larger the number, the higher the protection level. Protection level is mostly expressed by IP followed by two numbers, and the numbers are used to clarify the level of protection. The first digit indicates the extent to which the equipment is resistant to fine dust, or the degree to which people are protected from hazards in a sealed environment. It represents the level of protection against solid foreign objects, the highest level being 6. The second digit indicates the degree to which the equipment is waterproof. represents the level of protection against water ingress, the highest level being 8. e.g. motor protection level IP65. level of protection against contact electrical equipment and foreign objects (first digit) level of protection against water in electrical equipment (second digit)
