IMPORTANT COVID-19 UPDATE

Applications for the BEEAM program for the 2021-22 will open in February 2021. In accordance with MIT’s current COVID-19 policies for all K-12 Summer Programming (located here: https://covid19.mit.edu/k-12-summer-programming-update), the BEEAM 2021-2022 cohort will begin in Summer as a virtualized cohort – with all work being performed remotely. We are working diligently to ensure the enriching experience of participating in this program is not negatively affected by this change. Please continue to check back for further updates.


On the BEEAM application, applicants are asked to rank the participating MIT research laboratories in accordance with their interest in listed lab projects; rank 1 being the research lab of most interest to the applicant to rank 4.

Each BEEAM intern will be required to perform supervised research in a biological, mechanical, or chemical engineering laboratory at MIT.
Additionally, several professional development and educational activities will be scheduled during each term.

  • Summer Term (Virtual) – 10 weeks long
    • June 21 – August 27, 2021
    • Earn stipend up to $2,250
    • Monday – Friday
    • Total education and research commitment: 15 hours per week
  • Fall Term (Virtual) – 10 weeks long
    • October 4 – December 10, 2021*
    • Earn a stipend up to $1,800**
    • MBTA unlimited montly T-pass (not applicable during remote research due to COVID-19).
    • Work begins after school, approx. 3:00 – 5:00 PM*
    • Preselected days, Monday – Friday
    • Total education and research commitment: 10 – 12 hours per week*

During the Fall Term, BEEAM interns, who are high school seniors, will receive additional support to offset some of the associated costs with college application fees, college applications support, and scholarship writing support.

  • Spring Term (TBD) – 14 weeks long
    • February 7 – May 6, 2022*
    • Earn a stipend  up to $2,520**
    • MBTA unlimited montly T-pass (not applicable during remote research due to COVID-19)
    • Work begins after school, approx. 3:00 – 5:00 PM*
    • Preselected days Monday – Friday
    • Total education and research commitment: 10 – 12 hours per week*

*Prior to the beginning of the Summer, Fall, and Sping terms, the BEEAM intern, the intern’s parents/guardians, BEEAM mentors, and the BEEAM administration will agree upon the start and end date of the internship and the weekly education and research commitment schedule. 

*The start and end date of the Fall and Spring terms are subject to change in accordance with the high school academic calendar, MIT’s academic calendar, holidays, closures due to weather, etc.

**The amount of the stipend is directly proportional to the weekly education and research commitment.
