LCD | How to Choose an LCD Module

LCD module manufacturers have designed many standard type module products according to market demand to meet the needs of a wide customer base. Here are some suggestions for reference on how to choose the right LCD module according to the needs of the developed products.

Data to be considered for model selection

To choose a suitable LCD module, you first need to consider the following three key indicators.

Display resolution: the number of pixels of the LCD module must be greater than the maximum number of pixels needed to display the content of the product.

Form factor: LCD module size must be adapted to the product chassis structure size.

Circuit fit: The selection of the LCD module circuit will be directly related to the circuit design of the MPU system. Circuit fit requires a comprehensive consideration by comparing MPU system resources and module circuit characteristics.

Content First Method

Content first method is to give priority to meet the requirements of the display screen to select the standard product, using the structure to balance. This method is used when the product chassis structure leaves more room for module selection, or when the chassis can refer to the size of the module layout. This method will be the maximum to meet the display effect.

Structural priority method

The structure-first method is to select standard module products by form factor size. This method is used in cases where the structural dimensions of the product’s chassis are already fixed, giving little room for module size selection. This method will satisfy the structural dimensions to the maximum.

Customized modules

Custom modules can be used if there are special requirements for the display and structure of the LCD module, and if the cost of the mold is affordable in terms of the cost of the whole machine. The advantages of custom modules are exclusivity, manufacturer protection and protection from competitive markets, and optimal product structure. Custom modules are designed specifically for product characteristics and come in many forms. For example, custom dedicated LCD devices, the special characters or symbols required for the display are made directly to the LCD device. Such as custom dedicated circuit board, after selecting the LCD device, according to the layout of the entire panel, the module’s circuit board is extended to the entire panel control board, including display circuit, keyboard circuit, indicator circuit and other input/output interface and other functional circuits. In a comprehensive view, customization can make the best structure of the product and the most convenient mass production, which can get the best application effect and the highest performance to price ratio of the product. Custom modules require a certain amount of mold opening cost, which is the manufacturer’s input to ensure the mold cost and design cost, as well as the user’s self-confidence and credibility.
