In the era of Internet of Things, large screen becomes the main control terminal of home network

The International Display Expo (UDE2020) and Future Life Expo (iLife2020) was held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center from July 31-August 2, 2020. The expo, which coincided with the China Digital Interactive Entertainment Expo (ChinaJoy), attracted industry professionals, media reporters and tens of thousands of young Shanghai audiences to visit and experience the event. At the expo, Chinese and foreign manufacturers competed to showcase the latest display technologies, consumer-grade terminals and commercial display products. Quantum dot, OLED, laser display, Micro LED, holographic display, VR/AR and other display technologies were presented on the same stage, and the “eight major tracks” of the intelligent display industry were becoming clearer.

Track 1: New terminals for young consumers

Among the tens of thousands of visitors to this year’s fair, the post-95s and post-00s account for more than 90%. It is observed that the aesthetic habits and lifestyle of this part of the young consumer groups have greater differences with the post-70s and post-80s. Their requirements for the big screen no longer stay in the “look”, there is a higher pursuit of “play”. The gaming scene has put forward higher requirements on the dynamic image processing ability, responsiveness and human-computer interaction performance of the product.

This year’s UDE Expo, TCL, Hisense, Skyworth and other manufacturers exhibited the game screen is clearly sought after by young people. When the use of large screen broadened to gaming later, for a considerable part of young people, large screen began to become “useful” up, consumer demand will also arise.

Track 2: Trillion-scale home IoT market

At UDE2020, terminal manufacturers no longer display terminal products alone, whole house intelligence and life scenario solutions become mainstream.

In the era of the Internet of Things, the big screen becomes the main control terminal of the home network. The more complete the ecology is, the more important the role of the big screen becomes. exhibitors such as TCL, Hisense, Skyworth and Suning Little Biu have entered the home IoT industry and launched a full set of smart home appliances. On this track, improving the overall synergy and human-computer interaction experience of home IoT is often more challenging and easier to be recognized by users.

Track 3: The ubiquitous commercial display market

In the past decade or so, display device production capacity continues to expand, the performance of rapid improvement, the cost of display units continue to decline, adaptability and compatibility has become more and more powerful. For example, splicing screen, at present, in addition to the traditional LCD splicing, there are small pitch LED seamless splicing, laser projection seamless splicing and other solutions, for “display everywhere” to provide the basic conditions. This year’s UDE exhibition, TCL, Hisense, Lazard, Lehman Optoelectronics and other exhibitors have exhibited commercial display solutions.

According to the statistics of the Public Information Display (PID) branch of the China Video Industry Association, in 2019, the size of China’s commercial display market has exceeded the size of the home market, and with a 25% compound annual growth rate of high-speed growth. In the future, commercial display space is vast, in the office, education, transportation, medical, commercial and other fields, display ubiquitous is gradually becoming a reality. Once someone worried about the high generation line after the centralized investment in construction will not produce excess capacity, if the high growth of the commercial market is taken into account, digestion of investment capacity is entirely possible.

Track 4: The maturing flexible OLED market

Flexible OLED display technology application is also a highlight of the fair, large size products and applications, Skyworth exhibited the first OLED module homemade 65-inch wallpaper TV (Wall Paper) only 4.6 mm at the thinnest point; Xiaomi also exhibited 65-inch 120 Hz refresh rate OLED TV.

Small and medium-sized products and applications, TCL Huaxing showed a 10-inch Z-shaped folding screen and 6.67-inch AA Hole flexible screen; Tianma Microelectronics showed a 7.4-inch WQHD folding screen and 5.49-inch FHD flexible screen; Wearnes and Noble showed a 360-degree flexible folding terminal, flexible folding handheld, two-way dynamic bending flexible screen, O-Flex wrap-around screen and many other products. Zoyu showed the world’s first flexible screen technology tree “Soft Tree”. Flexible folding screen technology continues to mature and scale, will certainly drive a new wave of flexible replacement.

Track 5: Micro LED market on the eve of the breakthrough

UDE2020 exhibition, TCL Huaxing exhibited 3.3-inch and 4-inch Micro LED transparent screen; Tianma Microelectronics exhibited 7.56-inch Micro LED transparent screen, 5.04-inch Micro LED splicing screen; Jingtai Optoelectronics launched a pitch of 0.9 mm Micro COB program; Lazard’s Planar launched a 216-inch of Micro LED 8K large screen; Lehman Optoelectronics launched a 324-inch Micro LED splicing commercial display. As the giant transfer technology continues to break forward, Micro LED has entered the eve of marketization.

As an important technology route for the next generation of displays, Micro LED investment scale is much smaller than LCD and OLED, and in the key equipment, key devices, core patents on the relatively strong independent ability. Therefore, both terminal manufacturers, investment institutions and local governments are very active in the investment and construction of micro LED. Under the joint promotion of academia, industry and capital, the industrialization process of Micro LED is expected to make a comprehensive breakthrough in the next 2-3 years and open a brand new track.

Track 6: LCD market with increasing efficiency

At UDE2020, TCL exhibited 8K Star Obsidian screens with Mini LED backlight and a contrast ratio of up to 1 million:1, and Hisense launched an 8K stacked screen TV. With the increasing localization of quantum dot film technology, there is room for significant cost reduction. In the future, photoluminescent quantum dot technology will also be widely used in liquid crystal. The introduction of various new technologies has greatly improved the performance of liquid crystal display.

More than a decade ago, the LCD and PDP technology line of the dispute. Many people according to this type of projection whether LCD will be OLED, Micro LED and other new technologies to end. At present, LCD not only occupies more than 98% of the production capacity, has obvious advantages of economies of scale, while the performance shortcomings continue to be complemented. The next decade, LCD and other new display coexistence development will be the probable event.

Track 7: The rapidly growing home giant screen market

At UDE2020, the home giant screen became the focus of attention. Hisense exhibited 100-inch full-color laser TV 100L9Pro, Lazard’s PLANAR brand exhibited 135-inch micro-pitch LED TVs and other products attracted attention, and various leading color TV companies also launched 100-inch LCD giant screen products. Home theater began to enter the era of 100 inches.

For home theater, the product size is too large, resulting in household inconvenience is one of the important factors limiting consumption. In terms of volume, laser TV has certain advantages. The future, anti-light screen flexible curl design, can better meet the demand for hidden screen. In addition, with the mass production of Guangzhou OLED 8.5 generation line, as well as TCL Huaxing on the mass production of inkjet printing OLED research and development continue to make breakthroughs, I believe that in the near future, curly OLED screen will also join the family giant screen competition.

Track 8: OTT market with huge potential

At UDE2020, in addition to hardware performance, each machine manufacturer displayed OTT service ecology with its own characteristics, and TCL and Hisense also displayed application software such as e-sports games. According to the China Electronic Video Industry Association Network Audiovisual (OTT) Branch estimates, the large-screen OTT users exceeded 200 million in 2019, and the content service market size exceeded 20 billion yuan, and is growing rapidly at a compound growth rate of nearly 50% per year. The huge number of users will attract more application developers and service providers to participate in the big screen ecology, forming another important track other than hardware.
